Sinopsys: Images of snow-capped mountains, of stalactite formations, of the sea precede the shot of the Lourdes grotto, with the statue of the Madonna, and of the sanctuary. Pilgrims arrive there by train, and their processions alternate with those of the ecclesiastics. Penitents kneeling on the stairway, with close-ups of the faces, the details of the statues, the crucifixes. Sad theory of the sick parading towards the pools of holy water. The merchandise, the shops selling souvenirs and junk, the hodgepodge of ex votos and crutches, and once again images of the power of the waves. Finally, the inevitable nocturnal swarm of pilgrims with their torches.
History: The Belgian director Chales Dekeukeleire (February 27, 1905 – June 2, 1971) can be defined as one of the pioneers of Belgian cinema and, in particular, of what concerns the avant-garde cinematography of this country. Inspired by the new currents of French cinema and by directors such as Germaine Dulac or Jean Epstein, he made his debut at the age of 22 in 1927 with the short film "Combat de boxe" and collaborated with Henri D'Ursel on "La perle", both surrealist productions which highlight the director's visionary character. Also from 1929, "Histoire de détective", an innovative medium-length film of an experimental nature, should be mentioned.
